She was an American original, but in the course of her 39 years of service the whole world became her home. She traveled a total distance bigger than the trip to the moon and back, transporting over one million passengers safely to their destinations.
The outstanding engineering done by naval architect William Francis Gibbs and the Newport News Shipyard made her the safest ship in the world at the time of her commissioning. Some of America's innovations are still setting standards for today's passenger ships.
America's forward- thinking exterior and interior design together with her numerous contemporary artworks by famous artists made her the epitome of 'American Moderne' design.
After a long and succesful life, she finally met her end by the same element she had once been build to conquer.

Built at the end of the 30s as the largest and fastest transatlantic liner ever constructed in the United States, the America was christened by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt only hours before the outbreak of the Second World War.
As the spread of war made a service as a transatlantic liner impossible, America started her career as a luxury cruise ship in the Caribbean. She transported not only illustrious passengers like the later U.S. President Ronald Reagan, but also German spies in her crew.
In 1941 America was rushed into military service and completed for the next 5 years a reliable service as troop transport West Point. The ship transported over half a million soldiers to destinations all around the globe traveling a total distance of more than 430,000 nautical miles.
From the end of 1946, America could finally fulfill the purpose for which it was built: the transatlantic service between New York and the big European ports. For almost two decades, as the figurehead of her home country, she brought 476,462 passengers safely and comfortably to their destinations.
In a second career as the immigration liner and cruise ship Australis she circumnavigated the world over 60 times in a service connecting Europe and Australia between 1965 and 1977. Several hundred thousand citizens of Australia and New Zealand arrived aboard her in their new home countries.
After an unsuccessful interlude in 1978 as a low budget cruise ship with subsequent foreclosure auction, she managed to please paying passengers for the last time as a hotel ship and on mediterranian cruises as the Italis in 1979.
Since 1980, she was layd up. First named Noga and later Alferdoss she fell in a state of serious declay. In 1993 she was sold to Thai buisnessmen who planned to convert her into a floating five star luxury hotel in Thailand named American Star. During her tow to Thailand she broke free of her tow lines in a serious storm and stranded in early 1994 on the island of Fuerteventura.
